Our Help in Every Trouble … and More!
Psalm 34:19 ~ “Good people do not escape all troubles—they have them too. But the Lord helps them in each and every one. God even protects them from accidents.”
Recently:
I listened along with my grandchildren during their bedtime storybook readings. One book was titled, “We’re Going On A Bear Hunt (and we’re not afraid!). As the characters set out to find a bear, they encountered a series of difficult situations that required them to figure out how to overcome so they could keep moving forward. They had several unforeseen challenges, and as they appeared, they had to reason that “they couldn’t go around them, nor could go under or over them—so they had to go through them.”
In the storybook they used their best critical thinking skills. But noticing how much this story was like everyday life, I mused that while we often try avoidance, there is ultimately only one wise way to go. Yes, through. We always hope everything will turn out well, but we long for assurances.
Reflection:
It’s comforting to know that being faithful doesn’t mean being immune to trouble, right? In fact, Scripture assures us quite the opposite: “Good people don’t escape all troubles.” Hardship is not a sign of God’s absence. Rather, it’s often the place where His presence shines its brightest.
We live in a world where people often ask, “Why do bad things happen to good people?” Psalm 34 reminds us that good people do encounter trials—but they never walk through them alone. The Lord pledges His help in each and every one. Not occasionally. Not only when we deserve it. Every. single. time.
Also, God’s protection surrounds us even in unseen ways—guarding us from accidents we didn’t even know were coming. We may never know how many times God has rerouted harm, redirected timing, or quietly shielded us. His care is not always loud—but it is always constant.
Application:
1. Are you in the middle of a trouble you didn’t expect? Remember: God hasn’t left you. He is helping you now.
2. Think back on moments when things could have gone much worse. Can you see God’s quiet protection at work? Thank Him for those unseen mercies.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You that You never promised a trouble-free life, but You did promise Your help in every trouble. When things feel overwhelming, help me to remember You are already present, already working, already protecting. Teach me to trust You not only for rescue, but for resilience. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
